Joseph Hill - .NET Scripting with Boo

1800 Views :: 0 Comments :: Open Source, Joseph Hill, 4:15 PM
.NET Scripting with Boo

Boo is a "wrist friendly" language for the Common Language Infrastructure that combines the concise syntax of Python with the power of the .NET Framework and Runtime. With features like type inference, built-in literals, and string interpolation, .NET developers can make their programs do more with less typing, and start to use the framework in new and exciting ways.

This presentation will demonstrate some of the unique features of Boo which make it a powerful language in general, as well as a great tool for just getting things done. VB.NET and C# and developers in the audience will be shown how they can use Boo to leverage their existing knowledge of the .NET framework to quickly write effective scripts that might otherwise require writing complex batch files or other custom tools.

Audience members will also be given an introduction to Boos interactive interpreter, which can be used to interact with .NET objects in real time, providing an excellent playground for testing snippets of code or just experimenting with new APIs.

Cross Platform .NET Development with Mono

Mono is an open-source, cross-platform implementation of the .NET framework based on the ECMA standards for C# and the Common Language Infrastructure. With Mono, users can run applications written and compiled in Visual Studio.NET on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. This session will provide an introduction to cross-platform development and deployment with Mono.

Participants will see how they can leverage their existing skills and tools to write .NET applications that will run on multiple platforms and architectures with Mono.

Audience members will also learn some of the best practices for writing platform-agnostic .NET applications, as well as strategies for taking advantage of other features Mono brings to .NET development. Demonstrations will include developing web and rich client applications in Visual Studio and then deploying them to Linux and Mac OS X.
