Session Java/Eclipse, Brett Schuchert, 1:45 PM Brett Schuchert - Java 5 Variable Arguments
Java 5 Variable Arguments
This presentation demonstrates the use of variable arguments to: - Use the new OutputStream.printf and String.format messages
- Wrap a Log4J logger with a variable argument API
In this presentation we examine four versions of approaching the same issue. Along the way, we develop a very simple wrapper around the Log 4J logger that automatically checks the error level and only performs string formatting if necessary while keeping the API simple and clean. |

Session Java/Eclipse, Barry Solomon, 10:15 AM Barry Solomon - Object Relational Mapping Technologies - A Demo Enhanced Survey of Hibernate, JDO, and EJB Entity Beans 3.0
Object Relational Mapping Technologies - A Demo Enhanced Survey of Hibernate, JDO, and EJB Entity Beans 3.0
This presentation compares and contrasts the features of three well known Object to Relatinal Mapping (ORM) frameworks with respect to Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs) - Hibernate, JDO and EJB v3.
In addition to slide presentation, each ORM technology will be demonstrated in Eclipse with a simple database example.
The comparison of the 3 technologies targets the following ORM features: - Transparent Persistence
- Cascading Operations with Entity Relationships
- Entity Identity
- Attached / Detached Mapping States
- Transaction Demarcation
- Cross Cutting Persistence Concerns - Pooling, Caching, Locking, Eager/Lazy Loading
- Application Architecture with ORM POJO Technologies
Attendees can receive the Eclipse workspaces containing the examples by emailing the speaker. |

Session Java/Eclipse, Brett Schuchert, 12:30 PM Brett Schuchert - Introduction to Aspect Oriented Programming
Introduction to Aspect Oriented Programming
This is an interactive, example-based introduction to Aspect Oriented Programming(AOP). We will work through several code-based demonstrations meant to assist you in working out your own definition of AOP. You will be expected to be able to read Java code and interact in small groups to form theories about how the examples manage to go counter to your expectations.
Background material already exists for this presentation at: http://schuchert.wikispaces.com/AspectJ+Self+Study |

Session Java/Eclipse, Nathan Phelps, 4:15 PM Nathan Phelps - Getting the most out of JBoss Application Server – It’s all in the Microkernel
Getting the most out of JBoss Application Server – It’s all in the Microkernel
Learn how to take advantage of the infrastructure provided by JBoss Application Server to make your enterprise application more flexible, more manageable, and more maintainable. This session will center on customizing the microkernel by snapping in your own hot-deployable services while removing others to build exactly the server to suite your needs. AOP and the new JBoss Microcontainer will be discussed as well. |

Session Java/Eclipse, Nathan Phelps, 3:00 PM Nathan Phelps - EJB 3.0 – Has Spring Sprung a Leak?
EJB 3.0 – Has Spring Sprung a Leak?
Over the past several years, many enterprise Java developers have rejected Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) due to its complexity and weight and adopted lightweight solutions like Spring and Hibernate instead. In response to this shift, the JCP recently released the EJB 3.0 specification which considerably simplifies the previous specification, standardizes the ORM API in the form of the new Java Persistence API, and reduces the configuration headache by supporting Java annotations. This session will cover EJB 3.0 and the Java Persistence API and discuss if these new technologies are a suitable replacement for Spring + Hibernate based systems. |

Session Java/Eclipse, Nathan Phelps, 9:00 AM Nathan Phelps - Copy & Paste – Java, JEE and C#, .NET are More Alike than You Might Think
Copy & Paste – Java, JEE and C#, .NET are More Alike than You Might Think
Suitable for both Java and .NET developers, this non-biased session will discuss and demonstrate where Java, JEE, and C#, .NET are similar and where they are not. Learn how to apply your .NET skills to Java and vice versa. The session will include discussions on C# vs. Java syntax, EJB vs. .NET component models, ASP.NET vs. JSP/Servlets/JSF, as well as a look toward the future of each. |
